FAQs
Common questions asked by volunteers.
Casual Volunteers
Is there a minimum of time I can volunteer?
No. While we prefer repeat volunteers so the dogs can grow comfortable around them, we also appreciate once-off volunteers. We ask volunteers to stay until the required tasks are completed, which usually takes 2-5 hours.
Do I need experience around dogs?
Volunteers must be animal lovers, but no prior experience is required. Jeff will teach you all you need to know to help our animals. All it takes is a can-do attitude.
Is food provided for casual volunteers?
We recommend you eat before arriving, but we will provide drinks to keep you hydrated. Several restaurants are located within walking distance.
How can I get there?
There is no public transport in Langkawi. The easiest way is by rideshare through the Grab app. Set the destination to the Goldsands Hotel. If you have a rental scooter or car, free parking is available behind the hotel. When you arrive and are facing the hotel, you will see metal gates to the left of the hotel. Go through the gates and follow the path to WOOFF.
Do I need to speak English?
Yes, volunteers should be able to communicate reasonably well in English.
Do I need to provide advanced notice?
We can better plan volunteering activities when we know how many people to expect. 2-3 days’ notice is enough, but more is appreciated. If you organize volunteering more than a week in advance, please confirm you are still coming closer to the day.
What time should I come?
Most volunteering activities start at 12pm or 1pm. This allows time for the sanctuary to be cleaned and animals fed during the mornings.
What should I wear?
Wear rubber flip-flops and casual clothes that can get wet during activities like dog washing and hydrotherapy. Don’t wear your favourite outfit as it may get dirty. Valuable jewellery is also not recommended.
What should I bring?
All volunteers need is a love for animals. Please don’t bring food to eat as it disrupts the dogs.
What does being a flight volunteer involve?
If you are traveling overseas to a location one of our dogs or cats has been adopted to, the pet can accompany you on the flight, usually as special luggage. We'll take care of the paperwork, and the new owner will pay for the pet's airfair. You just need to book your own flight as usual and send us a copy of your itinerary, including the date, time, flight number, reservation number, and airline name. We'll also need a copy of your passport and contact details. We'll then take care of the paperwork and connect you with the adopter to arrange handover of the pet.
On the day of the flight, we'll handover the animal and all paperwork to you, and can assist you with check-in if required. Once you land, collect the animal from the special luggage counter, after passing through customs, and handover the pet to their excited new owner.
We need a minimum of 10 days' notice to organise the pet's paperwork and health checks. The sooner you can advise us of your flight the easier it is to arrange logistics.
Live-In Volunteers
Who can be a live-in volunteer?
Couples and single men can stay with Jeff at WOOFF while volunteering. Due to cultural constraints, WOOFF cannot host any single or solo female travellers. Women who are married or in a relationship can only be live-in volunteers if accompanied by their husband/partner. Thank you for understanding.
Are there any rules for live-in volunteers to follow?
Yes. WOOFF is home to our founder, Jeff, as well as to our animals. Please treat his home as if it is your own, and not like a restaurant, chalet, or resort.
Live-in volunteers are welcome to bring good culture, attitudes, and cooking skills, but please don’t bring any bad habits.
Please return home before midnight as the dogs will bark loudly and disrupt guests at 2 nearby hotels. If you want to experience Langkawi’s nightlife, please do so before or after your stay at WOOFF.
Volunteers are not charged for water or electricity usage, but please be considerate. Keep showers short and turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Be honest when applying to volunteer. Volunteers who turn out to be different to their profile will be asked to leave.
Is there are fee for live-in volunteers?
No. We provide accommodation and food free of charge to our volunteers, but you must abide by the rules listed above.
Is there a minimum stay for live-in volunteers?
Yes. In order to get to know the dogs and make a positive impact in their lives, live-in volunteers must stay for a minimum of 7 days.
Will live-in volunteers have time to go out sightseeing?
Probably not. Animal rescue work can be time-consuming and unpredictable. To make sure you don’t miss out on the beautiful sights on Langkawi, spend a few nights at a guesthouse before or after your stay at WOOFF and do your sightseeing then.
What types of work will volunteers be expected to do?
Volunteers will be expected help with tasks from daily animal feeding to small construction activities. To volunteer at WOOFF, you must be hard-working, trustworthy, responsible, and have a willingness to learn.
Is your home LGBTQI+ friendly?
Yes, all gender orientations are welcome.
